Week 10
Good morning, everyone. Hope you had a good week since last we met.
Today we will watch It's a Wonderful Life (1946), directed by Frank Capra, and starring James Stewart and Donna Reed. Set in a small town and depicting the struggle to live one's dreams, the film has become a Christmas classic and annual tradition for many Americans who see in it affirmation of life and the self-sacrifice it may impose. I hope you enjoy it!
I have a handout on writing about films that I will distribute, but a few words here. As your essays are to be just 350 words or so, focus on a key scene, moment, or several that you find worthy (your favorites for whatever reasons) and describe their impact and significance in terms of the story, its themes, the character, your personal history, etcetera. Our individual responses to art will be different from the next person's and that personal view/opinion is crucial to any essay. At the start, include the film title, release date, and director's name just as you see them above.
Below are a few URLs with reviews by some who love the film, and some who don't! The movie has a history and often you will see portions of it included in these writings. Best to limit yourself to just a bit of the backstory so that you have space to develop your response.
As always, I will return graded work and review some of the homework assigned and grammar work, though as the film is 130 minutes long, we won't have much time.
You should have got an email, too, about the IDEA survey. I'll double-check, but I think we can do it next week before you are to take the final in class.
Till tomorrow!
